TENNIS COURT CONSTRUCTION Work has begun on the two upper tennis courts. The foundation was poured March 25, and new fencing will be put in. The foundation must cure 28 days total. Then the courts will be painted and be ready for play around May 1, weather permitting. Please keep children and pets away from the construction area until the courts are completed. Thanks for everyone’s understanding during the construction. All HFII tennis players need to be flexible and share the two lower available courts as much as possible during April, especially once drills and matches start for the adult leagues. Thank you for your patience during April.

NEW TENNIS COURT SCHEDULING HFII will use a website for scheduling tennis time on our four courts this year. Residents can reserve the courts at www.reservemycourt.com. The schedules for the upcoming two weeks will still be posted at the courts but use the website for reserving the courts more than two weeks out. All adult leagues and drills, along with the reserved kids’ times, are already reserved on the site. Any extra reservations can be made through the website. If you’re reserving time within the next two weeks, use the paper schedules at the courts. Login name: XXXXXX password: YYYYYY (Contact Sandi for this information)

ADULT TENNIS LEAGUES HFII has one of the most active tennis programs of any homeowners association in the state, something we are lucky to have as an asset to our neighborhood. Last year, HFII ranked 51st in the state in the total number of league registrations. We had a total of 216 player registrations plus several Junior Team Tennis teams. Nearly every organization ahead of us was either a private club or a park district.

We field men’s, women’s and junior’s teams at many ability levels. You’ll get the opportunity to play singles or doubles tennis in weekly matches against other neighborhood and athletic club teams. Most matches are played in the evenings, but we also field women’s daytime teams, and some leagues offer weekend matches. Typically, teams practice once a week, often with the assistance of a tennis pro. As our players will attest, the teams are great way to work on your game, to get some fun exercise and competition, and to socialize with teammates and opponents.

In general, a member from each of last year’s teams volunteers to serve as the captain for this year’s team. The captain will organize the previous team members and any new players interested in joining. If you did not play last year and would like to play this year or if you would like to organize a new team, contact Sandi Stephenson. She will put you in contact with team captains and other players of your ability.

Most leagues require players to be current USTA members. If you are new to league play, you can obtain a membership from the USTA at http://national.usta.com. All players must also have an NTRP rating, which defines your level of play. If you do not have a rating from the past three years, you may self-rate through the USTA website.

If you are interested in learning more about leagues, tournaments, etc., the Colorado Tennis Association has a monthly email newsletter called blast! Anyone can subscribe at http://www.coloradotennis.com/cta/website.asp.

JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS Pawel Budzinski, who oversaw the Junior Team Tennis (JTT) program in Foxridge last summer and who is an assistant coach for the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams at Arapahoe High School, has agreed to oversee the HFII Junior Team Tennis program this summer. Practices will begin in May with matches beginning in June. Cost will be about $200 per child for the 11-week program with 7 match days. This will include two 1-hour lessons each week at our courts, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9 a.m. to noon. Matches are on Mondays. We'll do our best to stagger the times with swim team so there's no age overlap. We'll have an evaluation day in mid-May, where Pawel can hit balls to the kids and play some games and group kids by ability for the lessons. We'll need one parent captain for each team of 4-6 kids. We'll have JTT T-shirts for each team too. Pawel will also offer extra group lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays for anyone interested, intermediate and advanced levels for ages 9-14. Those lessons will be about $120 for 6 weeks. We'll also still have the Tennis Kids lessons for the younger kids not yet ready for JTT (see related article).

If you haven’t been getting the JTT e-mails and your child age 9-18 is interested in playing JTT in HFII, please contact Sandi Stephenson .

The following teams are tentatively planned.
Boys: 10 and under 11-12 years old
13-14 years old 15-18 years old

Girls: 10 and under 11-12 years old
13-14 years old 15-18 years old

KIDS SUMMER TENNIS LESSONS Tennis Kids will return this summer to offer tennis lessons to HFII kids ages 5-13 who are interested in taking lessons but who might not be ready for matches. Tennis Kids instructors are experienced instructors who specialize in working with young children through teens. Lead instructors are United Stated Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) certified. Tennis Kids instructors teach basic tennis fundamentals (age/skill appropriate) with focus on proper footwork and racquet position. In addition, eye-hand coordination skills, games and drills are incorporated to reinforce the stroke(s). Student/teacher ratio is based on the level of the class. Lessons will begin in late May and continue through August. Depending on interest, spring lessons are available as well.
